For this project, we had to construct a wooden stool by only choosing traditional wood joints as possible technique for the connections of the individual pieces. Except from wood glue, no nails, screws or other additional materials were used. After developing the final shape, I decided to use a dovetial joint for all the connecting points.

The base of the stool is a hexagon underneath which the four legs are mounted. At a height of 15 cm, sits an additional level, where one can store books, magazines or other items.

This little but affective detail gives the stool additional functionality.

The entire piece is made of oak and was build in the workshop of Hochschule Trier. By working with the material wood and getting to know its different qualitites, I got a good insight into the different machinery and tools.

This project, which took place at the very start of my academic career, helped me realise, that in every design object, every detail, however small, must be thought through with great care and deliberation. There are always many different solutions and possibilities how something can be connected, formed and build, and there is no right or wrong approach. Sometimes we need to follow our intuition, sometimes it is the material that decidcates the range of possibility of how the piece can develope.
